Retail Goldsmiths Home / Retail / Goldsmiths Fog cannons chase the robbers away Goldsmiths, opticians and other vulnerable retailers are increasingly using the shops’ fog cannons offensively against the criminals who try to rob their shops. The trend is new in our country, but fog has been used successfully during robberies in e.g. England. Therefore, the offensive use is also part of the recently adopted EU norm for fog protection. Criminals always go after the weakest link in the chain. When the banks are cash-free, the money transports are massively secured and the gas stations get payment machines, the thieves go after easier valuables in companies and private individuals. The tendency is experienced by private individuals and in retail, where well-secured homes and businesses are not so often exposed to burglaries, but instead are exposed to robberies when the residents are at home or the shops are open – and the valuables are easier to get hold of. The trend is new in Denmark, but known in England, among other places, where jewellers, goldsmiths and the Bank of England itself have chosen to secure themselves with fog. The fog cannons are manually triggered by staff the moment they perceive the threat of invading gangs. Many banks are secured with glass locks in the entrance areas, as you see on arrival at an airport. That way, you can refrain from letting in people you don’t trust. But if the robbers still get into the store, the fog cannons are the last defense. Danish goldsmiths secure themselves Several Danish businesses choose to secure with fog against robberies, often because they have been exposed to it in the past. “I have so far installed fog protection with remote control at one of my customers in Jutland and know that colleagues have done the same in Copenhagen, among others,” says the insurance company, who knows that several of his customers are considering the same type of protection. Along with the fog installation in Aarhus, the security company also established a safe room in the store at the request of the store owner. The decision was taken when his customer had been subjected to a violent armed robbery in his jeweller’s shop, where he was afterwards in a scuffle with the robber outside the shop. “He doesn’t want to repeat the experience. He expects crime to get worse. And he doesn’t want to retire early because of a robbery. The fog is a brilliant safeguard. And it’s quite harmless, unlike the weapons that you’ve seen some watchmakers and goldsmiths have secured themselves with. Weapons with the exposed party is a dangerous development,” concludes the insurance company.
